We stand at an unprecedented crossroads. Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant horizon. It has entered the classroom, the lecture hall, and the private study room. Yet the structures of higher education remain, in many ways, deeply medieval. Knowledge hoarded behind paywalls, access rationed by geography and wealth, and professors guarding their materials as though intellectual property were a feudal estate.
Accessibility is the first pillar of this discussion. Education cannot claim universality while entire populations are barred from quality content due to cost, location, or institutional affiliation. AI-powered platforms now offer real-time tutoring, adaptive learning paths, and multilingual content delivery at a fraction of traditional costs. Open educational resources (OER), when combined with AI, can democratize knowledge at a scale that was unimaginable two decades ago. Yet accessibility is not only a matter of infrastructure. I believe it is a matter of will.
Sustainability is the second pillar. Open education must be designed not only to last but to evolve. AI tools trained on living, updated datasets can remain pedagogically relevant far longer than a printed textbook. A sustainable model of education acknowledges that learning is not a transaction but a process, one that must be maintained and continuously improved, not abandoned once the semester ends.
Yet perhaps the most overlooked dimension of this revolution is psychological. The relationship between mass society and knowledge is deeply ambivalent. Centuries of gatekeeping have conditioned populations to associate learning with authority, with validation, with institutional permission. We have been taught to believe that knowledge belongs to someone and that accessing it without permission is somehow an act of transgression.
This brings me to a personal experience that illuminates this paradox with uncomfortable clarity. During my final year of a Law degree completed under a work-study programme. I witnessed firsthand the way academic institutions treat their own educational materials as private property. On more than one occasion, professors issued explicit warnings, some bordering on legal threats, against sharing course slides or materials with anyone not enrolled in the class. The message was unambiguous : this knowledge is mine. You may borrow it for the duration of the semester, but you do not own it, and you certainly may not share it.
The psychological impact of such postures cannot be underestimated. When professors treat their course materials as commodities to be protected rather than gifts to be shared, they model a relationship with knowledge that is fundamentally transactional and territorial. Students learn not only the content of a course but also its implicit epistemology : knowledge is power, power is ownership, and ownership must be defended. This is antithetical to everything that open education stands for.
I believe, and I say this with some conviction, that most professors who restrict access to their materials do so because they fear dispossession. They have spent years, sometimes decades, synthesizing and organising their expertise into slides, case studies, and reading
lists. To share this freely is, in their minds, to give away the very thing that makes them indispensable. In a world where AI can now replicate, summarise, and redistribute knowledge at scale, this anxiety is not entirely irrational. But it is, I would argue, profoundly misplaced.
Our cultural relationships with information shape not only what we know but who we believe ourselves to be. If you are told throughout your education that knowledge belongs to institutions and experts, you internalise a diminished sense of your own intellectual capacity. You become a passive recipient rather than an active participant. You wait to be taught rather than seeking to learn. The representations we construct of ourselves, our perceived cognitive abilities, our confidence in our own reasoning, are deeply conditioned by the epistemic cultures in which we are raised.
This matters enormously for AI and open education. If we are to make meaningful use of the tools now available to us, we must first address the psychological infrastructure that either enables or inhibits self-directed learning. An open platform full of rich content is useless to a student who has been conditioned to believe that she cannot learn without a professor telling her what to think.
And yet, here lies one of the great paradoxes of human motivation : we rarely choose to learn things that are genuinely useful to others unless compelled to do so. Left entirely to our own devices, most of us gravitate toward comfortable familiarity rather than challenging growth. We scroll, we consume, we entertain ourselves but we do not, without some form of external pressure, commit to the kind of deep, sustained learning that transforms us and benefits those around us. This is not a moral failing, it is a deeply human one.
What compels learning? Professional obligation, certainly. The threat of failure. The desire for social recognition. Cultural expectations. Sometimes, the love of a subject. But rarely, if ever, pure altruism toward the collective good. And so the open education movement faces a challenge that no amount of bandwidth or AI sophistication can solve alone : how do we cultivate the intrinsic motivation to learn, not merely for ourselves, but for the benefit of others?
Students and here I speak to myself as much as to anyone have a profound role to play in reshaping this dynamic. We must become the agents of our own intellectual development rather than passive consumers of pre-packaged curricula. This means engaging with open resources, contributing to shared knowledge bases, questioning our assumptions, and crucially embracing the discomfort that real learning demands. But this transformation requires more than willpower.
It requires a shift in values. And I believe that the deepest shift required is from pride to humility. Intellectual pride, the conviction that one already knows enough, that one’s existing framework is adequate, that learning is something one does for competitive advantage rather than for wisdom, is perhaps the single greatest barrier to genuine education.
If we cease to be arrogant, we become curious. If we become curious, we become open. If we become open, we learn. The good, in the deepest, most philosophical sense, flows through knowledge. Not knowledge as credential or as commodity, but knowledge as encounter : with the world, with others, with ourselves. Open education and AI offer us tools. Humility offers us the disposition to use them well.
The astonishment, then, is not that these tools exist. It is that we continue to build walls around them and around ourselves.
All of the above, however, remains aspirational without one critical ingredient : systemic change. Individual goodwill, student initiative, and technological innovation are necessary but not sufficient. For open education to truly take root, the solutions deployed must be structural, coherent, and sustained. Piecemeal reform, a pilot programme here, a generous professor there, will not transform a system built on centuries of enclosure. What is required is a redesign of the architecture itself.
This means, first and foremost, making open education desirable not merely available. A model that exists but is not wanted will not be used. Policies, whether national in scope or internal to a university, must not present openness as a constraint or an obligation imposed from above. They must present it as a liberation : a release from the intellectual scarcity mindset that has hobbled education for too long. The framing matters as much as the funding.
And funding matters enormously. It must be said clearly and without embarrassment : building a genuinely open, AI-enhanced, durable educational ecosystem requires substantial financial and human investment. This is not a weakness to apologise for, it is the honest price of ambition. The error would not be to spend generously, it would be to spend poorly. Resources must not be distributed in dribs and drabs, scattered across dozens of uncoordinated initiatives that exhaust administrators without ever reaching critical mass. Effectiveness demands concentration and focus. A limited number of well- chosen, well-funded priorities will always outperform a hundred underfunded half- measures.
The stakes are civilisational. Across the Western world and across East Asia, societies are confronting a demographic reality that no amount of optimism can wish away: ageing
populations, declining birth rates, and a shrinking base of working-age adults who must sustain increasingly complex knowledge economies. The same dynamic is beginning to emerge, at varying speeds, across virtually every region of the globe. Education is not merely one policy domain among others in this context. It is the foundational response to demographic contraction.
When there are fewer people, each person must be more capable. When each person must be more capable, the quality and accessibility of learning become matters of national survival, not just personal enrichment. A society that fails to educate its population well or that reserves quality education for a privileged few is a society that is choosing, slowly but surely, to decline. Open education, properly resourced and intelligently deployed with AI, if needed, is one of the most powerful tools available to reverse that trajectory.
This is why the educational model itself must be fundamentally rethought, not tweaked at the margins, not made slightly more digital, not given a fresh coat of progressive rhetoric, but reconceived for the era in which we live. The inherited model, a professor, a room, a syllabus, a set of proprietary notes, and a gatekeeping examination, was designed for a world of scarce information and abundant labour. That world no longer exists. In its place stands a world of near-infinite information, AI-mediated learning, and profound human resource scarcity. The mismatch between our educational institutions and our civilisational moment is not just inconvenient. It is dangerous.
Reform must therefore be pursued with urgency and with coherence. Invest in open infrastructure. Incentivise professors to share. Reform intellectual property norms within universities. Fund research into the psychology of learning at scale. Design AI tools that cultivate autonomy rather than dependency. And above all, resist the temptation to spread resources so thinly that nothing is ever truly transformed. Choose the levers that matter. Pull them hard. The future of our societies, their demographic vitality, their economic resilience, their cultural renewal, may well depend on whether we find the courage to do so.
